Jaisalmer is a unique city to visit for travellers as it has a LIVING FORT, where still 3000 plus people live, and then there is a desert which is the only actual destinations which you can enjoy desert safari, like on camel or dune bashing in Jeep, along with night stay in one of many camp resorts.
For travellers planning to visit Jaisalmer, here are a few important things to know:
- The best months for Jaisalmer tourism are from September to March.
- The period from Diwali to New Year sees the highest tourist crowd.
- Every year, the BSF organizes the Jaisalmer Desert Festival, which is a must-see.
- We recommend at least 3 days / 2 nights to truly explore Jaisalmer.
Below, we’ve shared a detailed 3 days Jaisalmer travel itinerary, curated and refined through our experience of serving more than 3,500 travel groups since 2016.

Arrival on day 1
So you can plan to reach Jaisalmer from your home city via train, as Jaisalmer is connected will all Tier1 & 2 cities of India.
Plus the Jaisalmer Airport, which opened in 2022 is also very active from August to March, as now you can get direct flights from Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad etc.
And by road, you can reach Jaisalmer quite comfortably as national highways in Rajasthan are very well maintained.
Hotel Check-in
After your arrival, check-in at your booked hotel in Jaisalmer city, where you have two options.
First book a bice deluxe to star rated hotels, situated outside the Jaisalmer Golden Fort, or at outskirts of Jaisalmer city, like Fort Rajwada, or plan a stay in Jaisalmer Fort, which has small but very modern hotels like Hotel Garh Jaisal Haveli.
Sightseeing or itinerary for day 1
As most travellers arrive in Jaisalmer after noon, so we suggest to plan a sightseeing tour from 3 pm (after our lunch) to night.
We start our Jaisalmer sightseeing tour from Vyas Chhatri, famous for its centuries old cenotaph dedicated to Ved Vyas, a sage who wrote the grant of Mahabharat.
Later you will visit Bada Bagh, a royal cenotaph garden dedicated to the lake Kings of Jaisalmer, and in evening visit the beautiful Gadisar Lake, an artificial water reservoir surrounded by ghats, temples & beautiful cenotaph.
By night you will attend the puppet show at NK Sharma (popular historian of Jaisalmer) museum, plan your dinner at a restaurant inside the fort like The Trio, and rest fir the night at your booked hotel.
Sightseeing or itinerary for day 2
Day 2 of your Jaisalmer trip is divided into two parts, starting with a morning checkout from your hotel.
From morning till 4 PM, enjoy a sightseeing tour of the Jaisalmer Golden Fort, also known as Sonar Quila.
This massive living fort still houses around 3000 residents. Inside, explore havelis that are 400–600 years old, built by wealthy merchants and officials. Notable ones include: Patwon ki Haveli, Nathmal ki Haveli, and Salim Singh ki Haveli.
The fort also features centuries-old Jain temples, as Jains were a prominent business community during Jaisalmer’s royal era. Don’t miss the Canon Point, a popular spot offering panoramic views of the golden city.
You can enjoy lunch at one of the many heritage havelis turned into hotels or rooftop restaurants. By 4 PM, exit the fort to continue your journey.
Tour to Sam Sand Dunes
As suggested earlier, check out in the morning and keep your luggage in the cab, since you will later check in at a desert camp in Sam, located 45 km away.
Arrive at your desert camp before 5 PM and check into your luxury tent or camp room. On arrival, you will be welcomed with a traditional tikka ceremony accompanied by dhol beats.
From 5:30 PM, head out to the Sam Sand Dunes for thrilling desert activities such as Camel Safari, Jeep Dune Bashing, Paragliding, and Quad Biking. Spend a memorable evening watching the sunset at Sam’s famous sunset point.
By 8 PM, return to the camp to enjoy traditional mehndi art, live music, and Rajasthani dance performances, followed by a buffet dinner. End your evening around a bonfire with cultural performances under the desert sky.

Sightseeing or itinerary for day 3
On day 3, you will first checkout from the desert camp, who also offer a complimentary breakfast.
Later you will visit some tourist attractions in Sam desert like Kabha Fort, Kiudhara haunted village, Amar Safar Jain temple, Bada Bagh & Jaisalmer War Museum.
And by lunch time, you will arrive at Jaisalmer city and with this your 3 days tour of Jaisalmer will be completed, and our driver will drop you at Jaisalmer Railway Station or Airport.
Some of our guests plan their departure from Jodhpur which is 5 hour drive away from Jaisalmer.
And you can also plan to stay in Jodhpur and on day 3 & 4 visit Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant thada, Umaid Bhawan Palace & Clock tower market.
Similarly some guests plan departure from Jaisalmer city on day 4, and on day 3 leave for Longewala from Sam which is 140 km drive.
Here their are 2 main attractions, the temple of Tanot Mata which has a collection of bullets and small rickets that landed in this temple during the India Pakistan 1971 war.
And Longewala is the post, close to Tanot Mata Temple, where this battle took place and this is one of Indian Pakistan international border.
